When Stewie Met Kelly
Posted By Wendy on 8/5/2008

Last night I was watching a completely brilliant and hilarious episode of "Family Guy," in which Stewie and Brian (the baby and the dog, for those who don't know) take a cross-country trip to Aspen, Colorado to retrieve Stewie's teddy bear Rupert. In order to barter for a helicopter over the mountains, the duo must perform a song and dance. Not satisfied with a simple funny tune, "Family Guy" took it up a notch and paired Stewie with none other than Gene Kelly! The number is a spoof on the 1945 film "Anchors Aweigh," where Kelly originally performed with Jerry Mouse. Take a look:

I love that "Family Guy" isn't afraid to go out on a limb to please its audience. And it's interesting to see that a dance film made in 1945 can still be impressive and relevant. Granted, it's now used as a form of kitsch, but the movements themselves continue to be awe-inspiring. It's sad that Hollywood can't invest in another marquee dancer like Kelly and build films around him or her like they used to. At least we can count on "Family Guy" to showcase those "good ole fashioned values...on which we used to rely!"

New Harry Potter

Check out the creepy new trailer to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, due out in November. This was another one of my favorite Potter books (though honestly, I could say that about nearly every book in the series except Chamber of Secrets). Not only do we see a lot of spine-tingling Voldemort backstory, but we also get to witness the horny Hogwarts kids finally get it on...I'm not going to say who, but if you haven't read the books, it's a doozy!

A New Dr. Cox to Join Scrubs
Posted By Wendy on 7/9/2008

This is a fun and interesting development. According to an article on EW.com, Courteney Cox will be joining the cast of Scrubs for a three-episode run as Sacred Hearts' new Chief of Medicine. Since I missed out on season 7, my first question is "What happened to Dr. Kelso!" but that's my own fault for being too lazy to tune in (instead of watching back-to-back eps on my DVDs, as I usually do). At any rate, Cox's character is set to "ruffle feathers," in the words of a Scrubs insider. I'm curious.

Now, does anyone know where I can find season 7 episodes? I'm definitely gonna check out Scrubs' season 8 as it airs (premiering this fall on its new network ABC) and I don't want to be playing catch-up!

Something in That Dirty Water

So, as most of you probably already know, the Boston Celtics beat the L.A. Lakers the other night to win the NBA Championship. They didn't just beat the Lakers, actually. They rolled over them like I used to roll over my cousin's Barbies with Tonka trucks. In the lead up to this less-than-inevitable demise, many people assumed the Lakers would take the title, comparing Kobe, for the zillionth time, to Michael Jordan. Well, I just found definitive proof that there's just no such thing as the "next" Jordan. He is Jordan and no other will touch him. Here's a clip of his top ten amazing moments in b-ball...it's like there's a magnet in the basketball when it's in his hands!

At any rate, had the Patriots not folded like origami in the Superbowl, Boston would have completed a beautiful trifecta of sports trophies this season. To those who lament the loss of the "lovable loser"-ness of Boston teams, I say suck it. I will bathe in the glory of my teams' awesomeness until another city (hopefully not New York) gets all greedy and decides to take over. So for now, let's just say we rule!

Why Fox News Makes Me Nauseous
Posted By Wendy on 6/13/2008

So, I'm back from a four-day trip to Chicago, where I taught hip-hop choreography to a high school dance team. It's been a while since I've danced like that, and I have to say, I'm needing more recoup time than I thought! Of course, I did have to spend the night in Chicago after my flight was delayed and cancelled, and after many many many hours in the airport, I'm finally home. So, that probably has something to do with the fatigue as well.

I digress. Anywho, now that I'm back home, I've had much catching up to do on the news. Amazing what you can miss in four days: A nation-wide ban on tomatoes, gas going up 25 cents, and massive floods in the Midwest. But here's one tidbit I wish I had never stumbled upon. Checking out one of Salon.com's many politic blogs, I found this gross sexist and racist blurb from Fox:

Fox News calls Michelle Obama "Obama's baby mama"

An alert reader wrote in just a little while ago to let us know about something he'd spotted on Fox News Wednesday afternoon. During a segment discussing conservative attacks against Michelle Obama, the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama, the network described the former as "Obama's baby mama."

I checked, and sure enough, as you can see below, our e-mailer was right. In fact, that description was displayed on-screen several times during the segment, which featured anchor Megyn Kelly and conservative blogger Michelle Malkin, an FNC contributor.

A clip of the segment in its entirety is below. You may notice that at one point, Malkin says, "By the way, it's not just Republicans who are criticizing some of her comments, but also statements have been made in the left-leaning blog Salon about her comments." I've searched the site, and I can't find anything like what Malkin is talking about. I've e-mailed Malkin asking for clarification -- if and when she responds, I'll update this post.

Update: Malkin responded to my e-mail; she says she misspoke and that she meant to refer to Slate, not Salon.
